The Energy and Climate Change Committee has today announced that it will call price comparison companies in to Parliament in the new year to face questions about the transparency of the information they provide to energy consumers.

Chair's comments

The committee Chair, Tim Yeo MP, said:

"There have been worrying allegations that some price comparison sites may not have been giving consumers clear enough information about the commission they earn.

Trust in the energy market is already at rock bottom so transparency is crucial. Until very recently bills have been so confusing that few consumers have been able to make an informed choice about which supplier offers them best value.

That problem is now getting better thanks to action from the regulators prompted in part by pressure from the Energy and Climate Change Committee. But trust in the energy market may be further eroded if consumers lose confidence in comparison sites as well.

We want to ensure that consumers can feel confident that sites are giving them accurate and transparent information and we are sufficiently concerned about this whole issue to call the comparison companies in to Parliament to explain themselves."
