Committee to hear evidence from the Charity Law Association

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on the draft Protection of Charities Bill will take evidence from seven witnesses from 2.15 pm on Tuesday 2 December in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.

The Committee, which is undertaking pre-legislative scrutiny of the draft Protection of Charities Bill, will take evidence from the Charity Law Association, David Anderson QC, the government’s Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation, and the Small Charities Coalition amongst others.

Possible topics

The first session will focus on the views of the CLA on legal concerns relating to the regulation of the charity sector and whether the draft Bill will be sufficient to ensure the Charity Commission can operate as an effective regulator.

The second session will explore with the impact of terrorism legislation on the work of charities and the Charity Commission and also the CQC’s use of powers comparable to those proposed for the Charity Commission in the draft Bill.

In the final session the Committee’s questions will focus on the impact of the draft Bill on smaller charities including how the activities and needs of small charities differ from those of larger organisations and whether they need to be reflected in the way smaller charities are regulated.
