On 8 December, Lord Boswell of Aynho, Chairman of the Lords EU Committee, travelled to Edinburgh for a conference with the chairmen of the committees conducting European scrutiny in the parliaments and assemblies of the UK.

What is ECUK?

Taking place twice a year in one of the parliaments and assemblies, the European Chairs of the United Kingdom meeting (ECUK) is an opportunity for the chairmen to discuss their work in relation to the scrutiny of their respective governments' actions in the EU. The event was hosted by the Scottish Parliament.

ECUK is attended by the chairs of the:

  • House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee,
  • Scottish Parliament's European and External Relations Committee,
  • Welsh Assembly's Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee and
  • Northern Irish Assembly's Committee for the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister.

Topics of discussion

Alongside discussing current committee work, mutual subsidiarity concerns, and possible ways to work together more collaboratively, the chairs also met with Professor Sir David Edward QC.

Sir David Edward, a former judge of the European Court of Justice, discussed the potential future challenges facing EU scrutiny committees, including the likely effect of further devolution in the UK.
