Role of National Parliaments in EU debated by House
15 December 2014
The House of Lords will today debate the role of national parliaments in the EU, including the EU Committee’s March 2014 report on the subject.
Speakers
The Chairman, Lord Boswell of Aynho, will open the debate. He will reflect on the EU Committee’s inquiry and the follow-up work it has undertaken since March 2014, as well as on the next steps for national parliaments working together and with the EU institutions.
The full list of speakers is available via the website of the House of Lords Government Whips Office.
EU Committee Inquiry and follow-up
The EU Committee’s inquiry focused on five key areas, including better dialogue with the European Commission and improvements to the ‘yellow card’ procedure. These areas have been the topic of discussion at several interparliamentary conferences since March 2014, including plenary meetings of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC).
The EU Committee and other national parliaments have also been in correspondence with then-President-Elect of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, regarding next steps during the mandate of his College, including a possible EU-level working group on the role of national parliaments. A response from the Commission is awaited.
