The Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) holds its third session looking at crime statistics. This is part of the Committee’s wider programme of work on statistics and their use in government.

About the session

The Committee will hear from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), who are conducting an inspection of all police forces in England and Wales into the quality of police recorded crime. They will also hear from the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police about the quality of police recorded crime in London, and the Deputy Mayor of London who acts as the Police and Crime Commissioner for the city.

Particular issues to be explored may include:

  • The quality and accuracy of crime data in the Metropolitan Police;
  • The factors that may lead to divergence from established national standards for crime recording;
  • Whether adequate procedures are in place to promote a culture of data integrity within the police; and

The methodology and progress of HMIC’s current thematic inspection into crime data integrity.
