Government Chief Nuclear Adviser to give evidence on long-term nuclear strategy

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee is to question Dame Sue Ion, Chair of the Nuclear Innovation and Research Advisory Board.

Background

On Tuesday 15 July the Committee will hold a one-off evidence session to get an independent update on the Government’s long-term nuclear strategy.

The Nuclear Innovation and Research Advisory Board (NIRAB) is the Government’s principal adviser on nuclear strategy, and the Committee hopes to hear from the chair on research priorities, progress on an international strategy for research and development, and the overall health of investment levels in nuclear R & D.

This evidence session constitutes a further piece of follow-up activity to the Committee’s 2011 report, Nuclear R&D Capabilities, and follows the evidence taken during the Committee’s follow-up activity in 2013.

Questions

Questions that may be asked will include:

  • What is the progress in implementing the research and development roadmap?
  • What are NIRAB’s priorities and plans?
  • Is nuclear R&D funding adequate?
  • How are plans for an international strategy developing?
  • What are the challenges therein?
  • How do you perceive the National Nuclear Laboratory’s transition to a National Laboratory?
