Lords Committee holds 'Launch Seminar' at the Geological Society

The Committee on the Arctic held a ‘Launch Seminar’ on Tuesday 1st July 2014. The purpose of the private seminar was to allow the Committee to gather background information and to ask questions of experts, before moving into formal witness hearings and issuing its Call for Evidence.

The event took place at the Geological Society, Burlington House and was hosted by Nic Bilham, Director of Policy and Communications at the Geological Society. It was chaired by Lord Teverson and heard from Professor Jonathan Bamber (School of Geographical Studies, University of Bristol), Professor Klaus Dodds (Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London), Dr Cynan Ellis-Evans (British Antarctic Survey), Dr Dougal Goodman (Foundation for Science and Technology) and Matthew Willis (Royal United Services Institute).

Following presentations, the participants discussed issues concerning the Arctic including: climate change, governance, ecology, economic opportunities and security.

The Committee is expected to agree its report by March 2015.
