The Committee on the Arctic was announced in the chamber of the House of Lords on Monday 9 June.

The Leader of the House, Lord Hill of Oareford (Conservative), made the announcement. The committee is due to be appointed on 12 June 2014.

Lords committees consider specific policy areas or issues – ranging from short, narrowly focused investigations to broad, long-term inquiries – and produce reports on their findings. Ad hoc committees are set up if the House decides to investigate a subject outside these areas.

The Committee will consider recent and expected changes in the Arctic and their implications for the UK and its international relations.

It is expected that the committee will submit its recommendations and publish its report by March 2015.
