Committee Chairman Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP said:
“I am pleased to be able to open the first debate on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the House of Commons for many years. It is vital that this horrific abuse is fully understood and I am grateful for the work of all those who have campaigned to raise the profile of this issue and bring it to the attention of Parliament.
I hope the debate will act as a spring board for the Committee’s inquiry and demonstrate to the Government the urgent need to do more to protect the estimated 24,000 girls under the age of 15 in the UK believed to be at risk of FGM.”
