The Home Affairs Select Committee holds a joint seminar with Google on promoting the positive online on Thursday 13 March 2014.
The event included an interactive presentation by several YouTube creators followed by an in depth panel discussion on Counter-Terrorism and Foreign Fighters. The members of the panel were Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP (Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee), Victoria Grand (Head of Policy and Communications, YouTube), Professor Peter Neumann (International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation), Maajid Nawaz (Quilliam), Munir Zamir (FIDA Management).
The event was also attended by, amongst others, David Anderson QC, community groups and representatives from the Police and the Charity Commission.
Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the Committee said:
“I am pleased that the Committee and Google have managed to bring together experts from internet companies and counter-terrorism to raise awareness about this important issue.
The internet can be a tool of radicalisation so it is vital that we seize it as a force for good. Though the removal of extremist content is essential, little focus has been placed on the importance of counter-messages. We must embrace new technology and make the right messages more digestible so we can flood the internet with positivity.
This seminar was a great success and I am hopeful that it will provide community groups and others a template for the future promotion of positive messages online.”
