Chief Scientist gives evidence on GM

This is the fourth session of the Committee’s inquiry into genetically modified (GM) foods and the way in which these are regulated at European level under the precautionary principle.
The first part of the session comprises witnesses from the academic science policy community and will focus on social and political considerations in the regulation of emerging technologies. Particular attention will be given to the precautionary principle and the way in which it might be applied in order to guide regulation under conditions of uncertainty.
In the second part of the session, the Committee will discuss with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Sir Mark Walport, the Government’s current policy regarding genetically modified foods.
