EFSA and EU session

This is the fifth session of the Committee’s inquiry into genetically modified (GM) foods and the way in which these are regulated at European level under the precautionary principle.
This session focuses on the current European regulatory system for genetically modified crops. The first part of the session comprises witnesses from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and its expert panel on genetically modified organisms. Questions will focus on EFSA’s role and operation in relation to genetically modified crops, its involvement in both risk assessment and risk management and its relationship with the European Commission.
The second part of the session comprises witnesses from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Consumers. Questions will focus on the operation of the current regulatory system and potential opportunities for improvement
