Wednesday 26 November, Committee Room 4A, House of Lords

At 10.40am

  • Sam Gyimah – Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Education

The Committee has heard from academics, providers’ organisations, parent groups, child poverty charities, employers, local government, and professional organisations and unions representing the childcare workforce. In this session, the Committee questioned Mr Gyimah on:

  • the Government’s aims in supporting childcare;
  • how child development aims are balanced against maternal employment;
  • whether current policy can deliver on child development without further investment in quality;
  • whether there is any evidence that support for childcare has increased parental employment or generated revenue for the Exchequer;
  • whether there is sufficient justification for the Government to continue the policy; and
  • what evidence there is that schools are willing and able to expand their provision of early education for 2, 3 and 4 year-olds.
