Following its public meeting on Tuesday 21 October, the Backbench Business Committee has determined the backbench business for Thursday 30 October.

Thursday 30 October in the Chamber

  • Debate on a motion relating to UK drugs policy (Members in charge: Caroline Lucas, Dr Julian Huppert, Bob Ainsworth)*
  • Debate on a motion relating to sale of park homes (Member in charge: Annette Brooke)

*The debate on a motion relating to UK drugs policy was announced last week.

Representations for debate received

At its public meeting on Tuesday 21 October, the Committee heard, in addition to a representation from Annette Brooke, bids from the following:

  • Steve Baker for a debate on money creation and society.
  • Jeremy Corbyn and Dr Julian Lewis for a debate on the renewal of the US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement

E-petitions

The Committee can consider any subject for debate, including those raised in e-petitions or national campaigns but an MP must go before the Committee to make the case for their consideration.

Backbench Business Committee

The Backbench Business Committee meets weekly on Tuesdays at 1pm to consider requests for debates from any backbench Members of Parliament on any subject, including those raised in e-petitions or national campaigns.

An MP must make a representation before the Committee for an e-petition or petition to be debated; e-petitions exceeding the Government's 100,000 signature threshold are not automatically allocated backbench time.

The Committee then has to decide how to allocate the limited Parliamentary time it has at its disposal. The Committee's meetings are always conducted in public and can be watched on Parliament TV.
