Lords Arctic Committee to hear from experts on Arctic maritime safety

The House of Lords Select Committee on the Arctic will tomorrow hear evidence from senior officials at the Met Office and UK Hydrographic Office, and the former UK Chief Coastguard as they explore the safety of shipping routes and cruises in the Arctic.

The evidence sessions will start at 10:40am on Tuesday 21 October in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.

  • The quality of weather and ice forecasting in the region and the possible impact of a large oil spill.
  • The priorities and direction of the Arctic Council.
  • What the impact of the Canadian Chairmanship of the Council will be both in the short and long term.
  • Whether the Council has adequate funding and support from its Member States.
  • The role that the UK can play as an Arctic Council observer.
