The Transport Committee takes evidence on rail investment in the north of England on Monday 1 September 2014.

This is the third evidence session in the Transport Committee’s Investing in the railway inquiry, which aims to scrutinise the impact and deliverability of Network Rail’s £38 billion investment programme over the next five years (Control Period 5) and to identify priorities for investment after 2019.

Witnesses

Monday 1 September 2014, Wilson Room, Portcullis House

  • Dr Ian Kelly, Chief Executive, Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce

Purpose of the session

This session focuses on rail investment in the north of England. The Committee takes evidence from a representative of Rail North—the 30 northern Local Transport Authorities who will manage the Northern and TransPennine Express franchises in partnership with the Department for Transport.

The Committee also hears from a representative of One North—the five city regions that have proposed increased investment in rail infrastructure in the north. Three representatives from Hull and the Humber also give evidence on rail services and investment in the region.

Likely topics for discussion include:

  • the level of investment in rail in the north of England;
  • the new Northern and TransPennine Express franchises and changes to direct services between Manchester Airport and Cleethorpes and between Liverpool and Norwich; and
  • proposed fare increases in the north of England.
