On 3 and 4 February, the House of Lords EU Committee will be represented at the European Parliamentary Week on the European Semester and the interparliamentary conference on economic governance, held in Brussels. The Chairman of the Lords EU Economic and Financial Affairs Sub-Committee, Lord Harrison, will attend, along with Lord Davies of Stamford, a fellow Committee member and former UK Government Minister.

The conference will present an opportunity to discuss such issues as:

  • The European economic governance framework: stock-taking and future challenges;
  • A European New Deal: stimulating public and private investment for growth and jobs in Europe;
  • Fiscal consolidation and structural reforms;
  • Strengthening the social dimension of EMU;
  • The payments shortfall in the EU Budget;
  • The accountability of supervisory authorities in financial services.

Participants include Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission; Pierre Moscovici, EU Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs; Jeroen Dijsselbloem, Dutch Finance Minister and President of the Eurogroup; Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament; Roberto Gualtieri MEP, Chair of the European Parliament Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON), and representatives of national parliaments from the EU Member States.
