On Friday 9 January 2015, students from five schools came together in the House of Lords for a debate chaired by Lord Teverson, Chairman of the Lords Select Committee on the Arctic.

The debate

The debate, which took place in Committee Room 4A, Palace of Westminster, focused on the following motion:

This House considers that environmental protection in the Arctic is more important than the need for economic development and job creation.

The House of Lords Committee on the Arctic has been appointed to look at a wide range of themes associated with changes taking place in the Arctic region. These range from climate change to the opening up of shipping routes, the environment to tourism, relations to security, biodiversity, and the implication of those changes for the UK and its international relations.

To date, the Committee has gathered a large quantity of evidence from expert witnesses. As part of its inquiry, the Committee also wants to hear the views of young people on this important and complex subject. The changes taking place in the Arctic region will impact on their future and that of other young people in the northern hemisphere.
