The Committee takes evidence from the MCA Chief Executive, Sir Alan Massey, on the new National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC); the development of the national network of Coastguard Operation Centres; and other maritime issues.

The session forms part of the Committee’s ongoing scrutiny of the Department for Transport and its executive agencies. The session also continues the Committee’s scrutiny of the Government’s reforms of the Coastguard service.

Louise Ellman MP, Chair of the Transport Committee said

"The Transport Committee has repeatedly expressed serious concerns about the potential impact on safety of the Government’s reforms to the Coastguard service.

I am increasingly disturbed by reports of low staff morale and am alarmed by reports of the breakdown in the national system at Fareham on Sunday 8 February. We will question Sir Alan Massey on the performance of the National Maritime Operations Centre, and raise with him concerns about the staffing and retention of local knowledge at Coastguard Operation Centres around the country. It will also be an opportunity to question him on other aspects of the service and the MCA’s work."
