Lords Committee to question Esther McVey MP

Esther McVey MP, Minster of State for Employment, will face questions from the Lords committee which reported on EU plans to tackle youth unemployment.

In a one-off session the House of Lords EU Sub Committee on the Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment, will ask the minister for her view on the European Commission’s efforts so far to address youth unemployment, as well as question her on the progress of initiatives in the UK.

Likely questions
This session has been planned in response to a new EU proposal to speed up the distribution of funding for youth unemployment projects across Member States. The Commission’s flagship programme, the Youth Employment Initiative, has been criticised for being too slow to release funding.
Other questions which the Committee will ask the minister include:
- What else could the European Commission do to enable the spending of Youth Employment Initiative funds in Member States?
- What progress has there been in the five geographic areas in the UK which qualified for this funding, because of their high unemployment rates?
- Have Local Enterprise Partnerships been given control of EU funds, as recommended in the Committee’s report?
- Are UK apprenticeship qualifications being recognised across the EU?
- Has the UK’s flagship policy, the Youth Contract, been successful?
- Has the Government reached its target number of participants under the Youth Contract?
The Committee reported on levels of unemployment amongst young people in Europe, in April 2014.
