The Defence Committee sends two letters to the Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Fallon MP, asking him:

  1. To set a date for a Commons debate and vote on the successor to the Vanguard class Submarine
  2. To provide details on the urgent refit of engines for the new Type 45 Destroyers.

Vanguard Successor

The Defence Committee asks the Secretary of State to set a date for a Commons debate and vote on the successor to the Vanguard class Submarine. The Committee say there is an unacceptable level of uncertainty not only in Parliament but also in the submarine industry.

The Committee also asks the Secretary of State for Defence for details on the urgent refit of engines for the new Type 45 Destroyers. They specifically want to know the nature of the failure and whether there had been changes to the specifications of the engines once the build was under way. They also ask for full details of how costs will be met and the impact on operational availability of each ship.
