Spending on healthcare examined at Salford NHS Foundation Trust

The Health Committee visits Salford to hear the views of local and national witnesses on the Government's plans for future health spending. The Committee are keen to find out about the effectiveness of integrated care nationally, including in the Manchester area.

Dr Sarah Wollaston, Health Committee Chair, said:

"We are delighted to be visiting Salford as part of our inquiry into the effects of the Government's five-year plans for public spending on health and social care.  We will be seeing the work of Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, which has a good reputation for innovation and efficiency in healthcare, and we are hoping to hear how the Trust achieves results for its patients.

The Committee will also be taking oral evidence at Salford Royal, when we will be talking to representatives from a range of national and local bodies about the implications of the spending plans. In particular we will be asking whether integrating health and social services will improve services for patients as well as delivering savings.

Among our witnesses will be Lord Peter Smith and Sir Howard Bernstein from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which is in the process of moving to devolution. The Authority has particularly ambitious plans for integrating health and social care services, and we will be asking how they are progressing. Other witnesses will include representatives of Cumbria and Somerset Clinical Commissioning Groups, and we hope that between them our witnesses will give us a detailed picture of the situation on the ground in today's NHS."
