Committee hears evidence on African Union and refugees

On Tuesday 10 November the House of Lords Committee on Sexual Violence in Conflict takes evidence from the African Union's Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and the Women's Advocacy Manager at the Refugee Council.

Background
In the first session the Committee focuses on:
- how the African Union's peace and security architecture addresses sexual violence in conflict
- how the number of prosecutions for conflict related sexual violence can be increased
- the African Union's role in tackling sexual violence by non-State armed groups such as Boko Haram and Al-Shaabab
- the impact of the UK Government's Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI).
The second session sees questions on:
- the link between sexual violence, refugee flows and international displacement
- what more can be done to prevent victims of sexual violence in conflict being further victimised
- whether UK efforts to prioritise victims of sexual violence fleeing the conflict in Syria are proving effective.
