Could the rising cost of living lock-in fossil fuels or champion low carbon electricity generation and energy efficiency? MPs quiz energy executives and oil and gas industry

The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) will be holding its first evidence session on Wednesday 8 June, exploring how the UK will manage the transition away from fossil fuels as well as securing energy supplies. The Committee is today publishing over 50 pieces of written evidence received by the inquiry.

 

Purpose of the session

From discussing the rising energy prices pushing millions into fuel poverty, to whether the Government’s British Energy Security Strategy strikes the right balance between energy saving and securing new supplies, experts and stakeholders will give their views on the future of UK energy security.

As the current war in Ukraine pushes up fossil fuel prices, Committee members will also be discussing whether the UK needs to increase domestic oil and gas production and whether this is compatible with the UK’s climate change commitments.

Members will be quizzing the Chief Executive of E.ON UK, a Director from EDF Energy, oil and gas industry body Offshore Energies UK as well as think tanks E3G and Oil Change International and a leading energy policy academic from University College London.

The first evidence session comes as the EAC publishes written evidence collected as part of this inquiry.
