On Tuesday morning, the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee will question Rushanara Ali MP, Minister for Homelessness and Democracy, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, for the Committee’s short inquiries on children in temporary accommodation and rough sleeping.

The HCLG Committee has also published today a selection of written evidence submissions received for the two inquiries, publishing eleven submissions for the children in temporary accommodation inquiry and three submissions for the rough sleeping inquiry.

The evidence submissions have been raised from a range of organisations, including Shelter, National Housing Federation, Crisis, CARIS Families and the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman. The submissions cover a range of topics, including the impact that living in B&Bs as temporary accommodation has on children and families, and how Government, local authorities, and accommodation providers could better support children and families living in temporary accommodation.

The written evidence submissions also pick up on issues including living conditions in temporary accommodation and the impact of the freezing of Local Housing Allowance rates.

The HCLG Committee has also published today a summary note of the Committee’s recent visit to William Collier House, a YMCA supported housing unit in Brighton. This visit was held as part of the Committee’s rough sleeping inquiry. MPs spoke to people with experience of rough sleeping and heard participants talk about a range of issues relating to rough sleeping such as the personal and structural factors involved, including the high cost of housing and lack of suitable temporary accommodation, and the challenges of getting support.

Ministerial session

At the Ministerial session on Tuesday, the cross-party group of MPs are likely to ask questions about the Taskforce on Ending Homelessness, standards in temporary accommodation, and out-of-area placements. The Committee is also likely to explore what the Government is doing to end rough sleeping and how the Government and local councils can ensure that those sleeping rough are able to receive the support they need.
