Biology and Health

Climate change and vector-borne disease

Work to commence in January 2019

A consequence of climate change is that non-native vector species (disease carrying organisms) could establish populations in the UK, or the geographical ranges and abundance of native vector species could increase. For example, the Asian tiger mosquito, which carries chikungunya and dengue viruses, was observed  in southern England in 2016 and 2017. This POSTnote will summarise the latest data on vector-borne disease in the UK for native and invasive non-native species, strengths and weaknesses of current surveillance and control measures, and highlight policy options to enhance biosecurity and minimise public health risks.
