Decisions 16 June 2008

Monday 16 June 2008 at 5pm in Speaker's House

Present:

The Speaker, in the Chair
Nick Harvey
Leader of the House
Mr David Maclean
Mrs Theresa May

1. FoI UPDATE (MEC)

The MEC agreed that disclosure of home addresses of Members could be refused on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the views of the Member concerned, his or her personal evidence, security considerations and the prejudice from such disclosure to the Member's participation in parliamentary business. The House authorities would assist Members in preparing such evidence. If appropriate, following such a refusal and an internal review, a section 36 certificate could be issued. The reasons adduced in each case could include general evidence from security sources and from senior parliamentarians on the adverse effect of such disclosure, as well as issues specific to the Member individually.

2. REVIEW OF ALLOWANCES (MEC)

The Committee discussed the recommendations in the chairman's draft report and decided to consider a revised draft at its meeting on Monday 23 June with the aim of publishing on 25 June in time for a debate on Thursday 3 July.

3. COMMISSION ANNUAL REPORT

The Commission approved the annual report and agreed to seek a debate on it in Westminster Hall in October.

4. NEXT MEETING

It was agreed that the Commission/MEC would meet on Monday 23 June at 5pm in Speaker's House.
