Llywodraeth Prydain yn noddi cystadleuaeth siarad cyhoeddus uchel ei bri yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd yn Llanfair ym Muallt eleni

Bydd disgwyl i'r cystadleuwyr ifanc ffurfio dadleuon cryfion ar bynciau amrywiol, gan gynnwys rhai sydd wedi eu pennu gan Bwyllgor Materion Cymreig Tŷ'r Cyffredin. Mae'r pynciau hyn yn ymwneud yn uniongyrchol ag ymchwiliadau cyfredol y Pwyllgor: darpariaeth carchardai yng Nghymru, ac effaith Brexit ar amaeth a masnach yng Nghymru.

Dywedodd David T. C. Davies AS, Cadeirydd y Pwyllgor Materion Cymreig:

“Mae'r iaith Gymraeg yn rhan bwysig o'n diwylliant ni. Mae'r Pwyllgor Materion Cymreig wedi ymrwymo i weithredu yn y Gymraeg a Saesneg lle bo'n bosib, gan gynnwys sesiynau tystiolaeth yn y Gymraeg. Rydw i'n falch fod Ben Lake yn cynrychioli'r Pwyllgor yn yr Urdd. Rydw i'n edrych ymlaen i glywed sut mae pobl ifanc yn mynd i'r afael â rhai o'r materion rydyn ni'n eu hystyried ar hyn o bryd.”

Bydd Ben Lake AS, aelod o'r Pwyllgor Materion Cymreig, yn rhan o'r panel beirniadu a fydd yn dewis enillydd ar ddiwrnod y gystadleuaeth, dydd Gwener 1 Mehefin. Dywedodd:

“Mae'n dda bod Llywodraeth y DU yn noddi Eisteddfod yr Urdd eleni ac yn dangos ei hymrwymiad i'r iaith Gymraeg. Rydw i'n falch fy mod yn cynrychioli'r Pwyllgor Materion Cymreig yn y digwyddiad. Rydw i'n edrych ymlaen yn fawr at feirniadu'r gystadleuaeth a chlywed dadleuon ar ystod o bynciau diddorol ac amserol.”

Mae lansiad y bartneriaeth hon yn cydfynd â chynlluniau Llywodraeth Prydain i atgyfnerthu'r iaith Gymraeg a'i defnydd yng Nghymru. Mae pob sesiwn allanol gydag ysgolion a mudiadau cymunedol ar gael yn y Gymraeg ac mae llawer o adnoddau Cymraeg ar gael ar gyfer y sesiynau hyn. Yn ychwanegol, cyfarfod yr Uwch Bwyllgor Cymreig i drafod cyllideb mis Tachwedd diwethaf oedd y cyntaf i ddefnyddio cyfarpar cyfieithu yn sgil newid y rheolau.

Mae Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd yn ŵyl genedlaethol a gynhelir yn flynyddol ar gyfer pobl ifanc yng Nghymru er mwyn dathlu'r iaith Gymraeg. Fel un o wyliau teithiol mwyaf Ewrop, mae'n rhoi cyfle i fwy na 15,000 o blant a phobl ifanc dan 25 oed gystadlu yn ystod wythnos yr Eisteddfod mewn cystadlaethau amrywiol fel canu, dawnsio a pherfformio.

Dywedodd David Clark, Pennaeth Addysg ac Ymgysylltu Llywodraeth y DU:

“Mae Llywodraeth Prydain yn croesawu'r cyfle i noddi Eisteddfod yr Urdd eleni, gan edrych ymlaen at glywed dadleuon angerddol y cystadleuwyr ifanc sy'n cymryd rhan.

Mae'n bwysig fod y gwasanaethau rydyn ni'n eu defnyddio i ddenu sylw'r cyhoedd at waith y Llywodraeth yn adlewyrchu'r ffaith fod Cymru yn wlad ddwyieithog, ac felly rydym wrth ein boddau y gallwn ychwanegu'r gystadleuaeth hon at yr ystod o weithgareddau ymgysylltu yr ydym yn eu cynnal.”

UK Parliament sponsoring prestigious debating competition at this year's Urdd National Eisteddfod

UK Parliament is sponsoring the prestigious debating competition at this year's Urdd National Eisteddfod (28 May – 2 June) in Builth Wells.

The young competitors will be expected to form strong arguments on diverse topics, including some set by the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Select Committee. These topics relate directly to inquiries the Committee is currently conducting: on prison provision in Wales, and the impact of Brexit on Welsh agriculture and trade.

David T. C. Davies MP, Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, said:

“The Welsh language is an important part of our culture. On the Welsh Affairs Committee we are committed to carrying out business in Welsh and English wherever possible, including evidence sessions in Welsh. I am pleased Ben Lake will be representing the Committee at the Urdd. I look forward to him reporting back on how the young participants tackle some of the issues we are considering at the moment.”

Ben Lake MP, a member of the Welsh Affairs Committee, will be on the judging panel on the competition day, Friday 1 June to help decide the winner. He said:

“It is good that the UK Parliament is sponsoring this year's Urdd Eisteddfod and showing its commitment to the Welsh language. I am pleased to be representing the Welsh Affairs Committee at the event. I am very much looking forward to judging the competition and hearing debates on a range of interesting and topical subjects.”

The launch of this partnership comes as the UK Parliament solidifies its Welsh language offering in Wales. All outreach sessions to schools and community organisations are available in Welsh with a number of Welsh language resources also available to accompany these sessions. Additionally a Welsh Grand Committee meeting to discuss last November's Budget became the first to use translation facilities after a change of the rules.

The Urdd National Eisteddfod is an annual national festival for young people in Wales celebrating the Welsh language. One of Europe's largest touring festivals, it offers the opportunity for more than 15,000 children and young people under the age of 25 to compete during the Eisteddfod week in various competitions such as singing, dancing and performing.

Head of Education and Engagement at the UK Parliament David Clark said:

It is important that the services we use to engage the public in the UK Parliament reflect the fact that Wales is a bilingual country, and so we are delighted to add this competition to the range of engagement activities we undertake.”
