Parliamentary shadowing scheme launches

The scheme provides an opportunity for talented Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) participants, over a three-year period, to experience the workings of Parliament by shadowing a Member of Parliament, active Peer and/or a business leader. 
 
As part of their experience and development they will develop skills around governance, policy, media, and community empowerment. They are expected to become an active advocates and leaders. 
 
Speaking at the event Speaker The Rt Hon John Bercow said:
 
“Schemes like my own Speaker's Parliamentary Placement Scheme and the Operation Black Vote Shadowing Scheme are supporting our ambition for an inclusive democracy. These schemes remind us that there is BAME talent in every city, in every part of the country and they are willing to serve.”
 
The scheme is partially funded by the Members Estimate Committee (MEC) who have the objective of increasing the number of MPs from under-represented groups. The scheme is also supported by the Aziz Foundation, which seeks to improve the representation of disadvantaged communities in public life.

OBV are looking for individuals aged 17 years upwards with a keen interest in making a real and positive difference to society.

Applications will be open for the next scheme in May 2018.

The scheme complements the Speaker's Parliamentary Placements Scheme, a paid internship scheme that gives Participants the opportunity to spend nine months working with an MP in Parliament and in the House services.
