UK Parliament and Royal Holloway celebrate 100 years of votes for women with free online course
25 January 2018
UK Parliament has partnered with Royal Holloway University of London to launch the new free online course 'Beyond the Ballot: Women's Rights and Suffrage from 1866 to Today'.
The new and exciting course will transport learners back to the 19th century, where they can explore the campaign for votes for women and discover the battle for equality fought by pioneering campaigners.
Going beyond the ballot
The launch of the free course, delivered by social learning platform
FutureLearn, coincides with the 100 year anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave most men and some women the right to vote for the first time.
Beyond the Ballot will start on 5 February 2018.
Supported by UK Parliament and the Heritage Lottery fund, this MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is part of Vote 100, a year-long programme of events celebrating a century of women's voices in Parliament.
Expert tuition
The course includes interviews with historians and experts from both Royal Holloway and UK Parliament.
Learners can explore the movements seeking to create change and discuss the struggle for equality that continued throughout the twentieth century.
Highlights include video of rarely seen documents from The National Archives and the Parliamentary Archives, as well as interviews with female MPs reflecting on some of the remaining barriers to equality.
Celebrating with Vote 100
UK Parliament's Vote 100 project is a year-long programme of events celebrating a century of women's voices in Parliament, the journey towards universal suffrage and the first women MPs.
Throughout 2018, Vote 100 will celebrate these milestones, and the contribution of women to politics in the UK, with a series of events, exhibitions and educational programmes.
