Campaigners from across the country nominated for the Petitioner of the Year award

Campaigners, all of whom started petitions following the loss of loved ones, have been nominated for a Parliamentary award.

The Petitions Committee, a cross-party group of MPs, nominated three campaigns for the Petitioner of the Year award.

Cat Smith MP, the Chair of the Petitions Committee, said: “As Chair of the Petitions Committee, I have seen first-hand the incredible campaigning of these three groups of petitioners.

“The work that each of them put it into their campaigns, often beginning in times of grief, have led to positive changes across the country.

“I want to pay tribute to each of them and wish them luck.”

Campaigners for change

The following petitioners were nominated by MPs for the Petitioner of the Year award:

  • Jade’s Law (e-petition 614893)

The petitioners for Jade’s Law called for parental rights to be automatically suspended when a parent is found guilty of murdering the other parent. The campaign began after the murder of Jade Ward by her former partner in 2021.

  • Owen’s Law (e-petition 585304)

The petitioners for Owen’s Law called for menus to include allergy information and restaurant staff to conduct allergy conversations with customers. The campaign began after the death of Owen Carey in 2017 following an anaphylactic reaction after eating food at a restaurant, which he had been assured was safe to eat.

  • Three Dad’s Walking (e-petition 623390)

The petitioners Three Dad’s Walking called for suicide prevention to be a compulsory part of the national curriculum. The three fathers, Mike, Andy and Tim all lost a daughter to suicide in 2020 and began campaigning a year later.

UK Parliament Week Awards

The Petitioner of the Year award is part of the UK Parliament Week Awards run by UK Parliament.

The winner will be announced at the end of February.

All three petitions were scheduled for debate by the Petitions Committee.

The winner will take part in a ceremony with the Speaker of the House of Commons in the House of Commons on Monday 25 March.
