People across the country are set to explore the work of UK Parliament and how they can get involved with both the House of Commons and House of Lords during 2023’s UK Parliament Week.

Taking place from 6 until 12 November, there are more than 11,000 events planned across the country, as well as in the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories.

UK Parliament Week is an annual activity spreading the word about what Parliament is, what it does and how people can get involved. This year, UK Parliament Week takes place in the same week as the State Opening of Parliament.

Participants can use their free UK Parliament Week resource kits to host events and young people will be encouraged to play a Parliamentary-themed board game, The Ayes Have It, included in the packs.

Last year, over a million people attended UK Parliament Week events finding out what Parliament does, how people can make change through Parliament, how they can get involved more with the work of UK Parliament, and more about the history of the parliamentary estate.

Thousands of schools and colleges will also host events where young people can engage with things that matter to them and be empowered to make a difference.

The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, said: "If you have ever wondered if politics is for you – why not get involved in UK Parliament Week?

“It’s a great opportunity to find out how you can make a difference on an issue that matters to you – and a chance to find out more about our history.

”How about attending an event in your local constituency, or writing to your MP, or even

starting a petition on our website?

”If you want to make things happen – you have to be a part of it. Why not use UK Parliament Week as a launch pad to effect change?'”

The Lord Speaker, Lord McFall of Alcluith, said: “The Houses of Parliament do not belong to the Government or the MPs or the peers. They belong to the people of the UK, and I support all initiatives to help the public engage with the work done at Westminster.

“UK Parliament Week is an excellent opportunity to see that work in action.

“Why not go to a UK Parliament Week event in your local area, write to a peer on an issue you’re passionate about, check out online what the members of the House of Lords are discussing this week or listen to peers discuss their work on my Lord Speaker’s Corner podcast?

“Our communities and our young people inspire and drive the work of the House of Lords. It is by hearing and understanding the priorities of the citizens of the UK that Parliament is able to fulfil its primary task of making good law. So, get involved and have your say. I – and my fellow peers – want to hear what you think.”

Fran Jeens, Head of Education and Engagement at UK Parliament, said: “UK Parliament Week is a great opportunity for people of all ages to get informed about how they can engage with UK Parliament to make a difference. Every year it’s fantastic to see so many people actively take part in UK Parliament Week.”
