Houses of Parliament tours among the Top 10% of things to do worldwide

After over three hundred newly-elected MPs took their seats on the iconic green benches and got to work earlier this month, members of the public now have the chance to go behind-the-scenes at the heart of Westminster this summer.

The awe-inspiring tours through the House of Commons and the House of Lords Chambers and Westminster Hall have also just been recognised as being among the top 10% of things to do worldwide, according to Tripadvisor.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, said: ‘It’s one of the best-known landmarks in the world, a tourist attraction, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and the place that I am lucky enough to call my workplace. So, I am delighted that the doors of the Palace of Westminster will once again be thrown open to the public, so that more people will experience this beautiful, historic and iconic building, which has been the setting for many of the dramatic and significant events in the nation’s history and at the centre of the democratic process.’

Lord McFall of Alcluith, Speaker of the House of Lords, said: ‘Millions from around the world watch the State Opening of Parliament and listen to the King’s Speech delivered from the Royal Throne in the House of Lords chamber. I am therefore pleased to see our doors opened so that visitors may experience the Palace of Westminster for themselves and feel part of its extraordinary history. We offer the warmest of welcomes and a journey through defining moments in our past that help us understand our present. A visit to the home of the UK Parliament and the beating heart of our democracy will be an unforgettable one.’

Visitors to Parliament can explore the UK’s rich political history, as well as the art and architecture of this world-famous royal palace, which dates back to the 11th century.

Guests have the option to choose a compelling tour delivered by one of Parliament’s  expert guides, or soak up the atmosphere at their own pace with a multimedia, multi-language audio guide. Both tours provide a unique insight into what happens at UK Parliament today, while standing in the footsteps of parliamentarians past and present.
