Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Viscount Slim, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 12 January 2019.
A by-election was held on 26 March 2019 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Ravensdale was elected. 

2018 by-elections

Hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Skelmersdale, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 31 October 2018.

A by-election was held on 22 January 2019 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Reay was elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Lord Northbourne, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 4 September 2018.

A by-election was held on 28 November 2018 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Carrington was elected.

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Lord Glentoran, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 1 June 2018.

A by-election was held on 18 July to fill the vacant seat. Lord Bethell was elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 9 May 2018.

A by-election was held on 4 July 2018 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Devon was elected.

2017 by-elections

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Lord Walpole, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 13 June 2017.

A by-election was held on 19 July 2017 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Vaux of Harrowden was elected.

Hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Lyell, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 11 January 2017.

A by-election was held on 21 March 2017 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Colgrain was elected.

2016 by-elections

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following Lord Bridges ceasing to be a member of the House on 18 May 2016 by virtue of non-attendance in session 2015–16. He was a Crossbench hereditary peer.

A by-election was held on 12 July 2016 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Cork and Orrery (Lord Boyle) was elected.

Liberal Democrat hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Avebury, a Liberal Democrat hereditary peer, on 14 February 2016.

A by-election was held on 19 April 2016 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Thurso was elected.

 

2015 by-elections

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 31 August 2015.

A by-election was held on 24 November 2015 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Fairfax of Cameron was elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 23 July 2015.

A by-election was held on 20 October 2015 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Trevethin and Oaksey was elected.

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Lord Luke, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 24 June 2015.

A by-election was held on 16 September 2015 to fill the vacant seat. The Duke of Wellington was elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the retirement of Viscount Tenby, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 1 May 2015.

A by-election was held on 7 July 2015 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Mountevans was elected.

2014 by-elections

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

Two vacancies were created following the retirements of Lord Chorley and Lady Saltoun of Abernethy, both Crossbench hereditary peers, on 17 November 2014 and 12 December 2014 respectively.

A by-election was held on 2 February 2015 to fill the vacancies. Lord Thurlow and the Earl of Kinnoull were elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Viscount Allenby of Megiddo, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 3 October 2014. A further vacancy was created following the retirement of Lord Cobbold, also a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 13 October 2014.

A by-election was held on 10 December 2014 to fill the vacancies. Lord Russell of Liverpool and the Duke of Somerset were elected.

Hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Methuen, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 9 July 2014.
A by-election was held on 21 October 2014 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Oxford and Asquith was elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Moran, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 14 February 2014.
A by-election was held on 9 April 2014 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Cromwell was elected.

2013 by-elections

Hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Reay, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 10 May 2013.
A by-election was held on 16 July 2013 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Borwick was elected.

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Earl Ferrers, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 13 November 2012.
A by-election was held on 6 February 2013 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Ridley was elected.

2012 by-elections

There were no by-elections held in 2012.

2011 by-elections

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of the Earl of Onslow, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 14 May 2011.
A by-election was held on 20 July 2011 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Ashton of Hyde was elected.

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Ampthill, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 23 April 2011.
A by-election was held on 20 July 2011 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Colville of Culross was elected.

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Monson, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 12 February 2011.
A by-election was held on 10 May 2011 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Lytton was elected.

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Strabolgi, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 24 December 2010.
A by-election was held on 22 March 2011 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Hanworth was elected.

A vacancy was created following the death of the Earl of Northesk, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 28 March 2010.
A by-election was held on 23 June 2010 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Younger of Leckie was elected.

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Viscount Colville of Culross, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 8 April 2010.
A by-election was held on 23 June 2010 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Clancarty was elected.

2009 by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Viscount Bledisloe, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 12 May 2009.
A by-election was held on 15 July 2009 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Aberdare was elected.

2008 by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Baroness Darcy de Knayth, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 24 February 2008.
A by-election was held on 22 May 2000 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Stair was elected.

2007 by-election

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Mowbray and Stourton, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 12 December 2006.
A by-election was held on 7 March 2007 to fill the vacant seat. Earl Cathcart was elected.

2006 by-elections

There were no by-elections held in 2006.

2005 by-elections

Crossbench hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Baroness Strange, a Crossbench hereditary peer, on 11 March 2005.
A by-election was held on 23 June 2005 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Montgomery of Alamein was elected.

Hereditary peers' by-election

Two vacancies were created following the deaths of Lord Burnham, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 1 January 2005 and Lord Aberdare, one of the 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 23 January 2005. 
A by-election was held on 10 March 2005 to replace the late Lord Burnham. Lord De Mauley was elected. A further by-election was held on 22 March 2005 to replace the late Lord Aberdare. Viscount Eccles was elected.

Liberal Democrat hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Earl Russell, a Liberal Democrat hereditary peer, on 14 October 2004.
A by-election was held on 13 January 2005 to fill the vacant seat. The Earl of Glasgow was elected.

2004 by-election

Conservative hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Vivian, a Conservative hereditary peer, on 28 February 2004.
A by-election was held on 13 May 2004 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Trenchard was elected.

2003 by-elections

Labour hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Lord Milner, a Labour hereditary peer, on 20 August 2003.
A by-election was held on 30 October 2003 to fill the vacant seat. Lord Grantchester was elected.

Hereditary peers' by-election

A vacancy was created following the death of Viscount of Oxfuird, one of 15 hereditary peers elected by the whole House in 1999, on 3 January 2003.
A by-election was held on 26 March 2003 to fill the vacant seat. Viscount Ullswater was elected.
