A minority government is a government formed by a political party that does not have an overall majority of MPs in the House of Commons.
A party may decide to govern alone - rather than form a coalition with another party - if there is a hung Parliament, when no single party has a clear majority in the Commons. A minority government needs the support of MPs from other parties in order to pass any legislation.
