Thoughts and reflections
The group felt that their research had revealed the important role played by Birmingham in the electoral reform movement throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Birmingham individuals such as Thomas Attwood, Joseph Sturge and John Bright were all instrumental in the electoral reform movement during the nineteenth century. But as well as finding out about the role of these key individuals, our group also discovered that many Birmingham people, now unknown, were involved in the slow process of reform. In their thousands they participated by signing petitions and attending the massive public meetings which were held regularly in Birmingham places such as the Bull Ring and New Hall Hill.
In addition to this case study, the project has also resulted in the creation of a historic trail around Birmingham, which features some of the key Birmingham sites in the history of the electoral reform movement.
