Gilbert Campion was a member of staff in the House of Commons, and served as Clerk of the House between 1937 and 1948. He was made Lord Campion in 1950. In 1953, Campion was asked by one of Nancy Astor's sons to write some reflections on his mother. Campion first did some research, assisted by House of Lords Library staff who supplied a note on 'Astor and the Staff of the House of Commons'. This described how Astor invited all Commons staff for tea at her country house, Cliveden, in 1945 and 1952. Campion then wrote a short piece with his memories of and reflections on Astor as an MP.
