Despite stepping down as party leader and Prime Minister nine years earlier, Churchill continued to serve as an MP until 1964. Now aged 89, Churchill's ailing health meant that his appearances in Westminster were limited, and on 27 July 1964 he finally stood down as a Member of Parliament. On the day of his retirement a copy of this Vote of Thanks was presented to Churchill in his residence at Hyde Park Gate by the three party leaders.

The Vote of Thanks commended Churchill for his services to ‘Parliament, the nation and the world' and other tributes in Westminster included ‘The Churchill Arch', an entrance to the chamber of new House of Commons, and two statues, one in Members Lobby and the other in Parliament Square.
