American soldiers at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior

Buried in Westminster Abbey on 11 November 1920, the Unknown Warrior symbolises all those who died for their country in the First World War, particularly those who have no known grave. The artist Frank O Salisbury attended the burial and made a sketch of the event which he used as the basis for a large painting now in the Houses of Parliament.

During the Second World War Frank O Salisbury returned to his original sketch to complete the view of the tomb, showing American soldiers paying silent homage in 1942.
