Westminster Landscape by Adrian Allinson

Oil on canvas painting by Adrian Allison c.1923 showing a Westminster Landscape. The artist was likely to have observed the scene from the Palace Chambers building which stood on the east of Canon Row in the 1920s.

Adrian Allinson was born in London in 1890. He studied at the Slade School of Art from 1910-12 specialising in painting, sculpture and landscapes. At the Slade he was a member of a notable group of students including Carrington, Spencer, Gertler and Nash.

Allinson was a conscientious objector during both the First and Second World Wars. During WWII he was selected as a government war artist by the War Artists Advisory Committee and his views of rural and urban spaces were used as part of the ‘Dig for Victory' campaign on the home front.
