Richard II at His Majesty's Theatre

This document is a theatre programme for a production of Shakespeare's play Richard II which was performed at His Majesty's Theatre, now known as Her Majesty's Theatre, in London. It is from the papers of Victoria Leveson-Gower, the youngest sister of William Leveson-Gower (1883-1918), Clerk in the Journal Office of the House of Lords between 1908 and 1914.

This production was performed in 1903. It featured notable British actors of the period including Brandon Thomas, Lyn Harding and Basil Gill. English actor and theatre manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree played the lead. He was known for acting in lead roles in Shakespeare plays. In 1899 he raised funds for His Majesty's Theatre, subsequently becoming the theatre manager. The theatre was internationally famous in the Edwardian period for its productions of Shakespeare's plays.

Act 1, scene 1 of the play was based in the old Palace of Westminster and Act 3, scene 1 featured Westminster Hall.
