Housing Act 1924

The first Labour Government was a short lived affair that lasted from January 1924 to the following November. MacDonald undertook a dual role of both Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary. By the summer of 1924, the inexperienced Labour Government was being besieged by accusations of corruption and indiscretions in the field of foreign diplomacy. This led to the dissolution of Parliament forced through by a Conservative party motion. In the subsequent election the Conservatives returned to office with a large majority vote. Despite the shortcomings of their brief tenure in government, the Labour Party did achieve some degree of success in the legislative field. The Housing (Financial Provisions) Act was the pinnacle of their social policy agenda which successfully sought to tackle the housing shortage which had worsened since the end of the First World War.
