Tyne and Wear Case Study

This case study is the result of a partnership between the Parliamentary Archives, Parliamentary Outreach and Tyne and Wear Archives.  It is part of the Connecting with Communities project which was launched in July 2009.

The Communities project explores the impact of Parliament on local communities and investigates how people have influenced Parliament.  We do this by researching material held in the Parliamentary Archives at Westminster, as well as records held locally by regional archives.
This project looks at the improvement of public health in Sunderland during the nineteenth century.

Death, Dirt and Disease

By researching the records of Sunderland Corporation our group were able to find out about how the local administration was trying to improve public health in Sunderland from the 1830s onwards.

Introduction

This case study looks at the improvement of public health in Sunderland during the nineteenth century, and the role played in that process by local people and by Parliament.
