Industry and community
Since the 18th century, Parliament has increasingly recognised the importance of industry to Britain's prosperity. Wherever possible it has passed legislation to encourage growth, not simply for economic purposes, but also to ensure the welfare of the local communities which have provided the supporting workforces.
