Jean Winder

Equal pay was a demand of women campaigners from the 19th century. Women entered the workforce in large numbers during the First and Second World Wars, many doing the same work as men but for significantly less money. One of these women was Jean Winder, the first woman to become a permanent Hansard reporter in the House of Commons. She was appointed in 1944 and fought a long battle to be paid the same as her male colleagues, eventually succeeding in 1954.
