Ayesha Daud

Letter by Ayesha Daud, Year 9

Dear Saartjie Baartman,

Tricked from your homeland,
Made to tour Europe, displayed as a freak
Torn apart in life as well as death
Your legacy goes on.

Disrespected, poked and prodded
Made to feel less than human
Tortured in life and death
Your legacy goes on.

Know now, hundreds of years on you are not forgotten. You are soon to be put to rest in your homeland. Your body won't be able to reform but the pieces of you that were separated will be brought back together. Slavery while still alive has diminished. People of all races are working alongside one another. Many of the torturers you faced, today, are no longer around.

Yours,
Old Mary
