Chained up in my mind, Natalie Methu

Poem by Natalie Methu, Year 9

They look at me and stare
I hear them whisper as I walk by,
I hear them say:
"Look at her she ain't kind
She's the one chained up in her mind."
I suffer alone, no help at all
But I am allowed to walk free
Even though I hear my owners say:
"Look at her she is mine
She's the one chained up in her mind."
I sit onboard this great ship
Watching the waves roll by
Even the sea seems to say:
"Look at her have you heard,
apparently she's not kind
She's the one they say
is chained up in her mind."
So when I hold my child in my arms
I listen to her cry,
I talk to her about the world
And listen for a reply
"Look at my mother is she kind?
She's the one they say is
chained up in her mind."
So now it's me, just me talking to myself
I think I'm going crazy
Because even my own mind seems to say:
"Look at me I ain't kind
I am the one chained up in my mind."
