Architecture: Railway Cottages
The Station Master's house was not the only housing in Marden built by the Railway Company.
The above photograph shows a row of brick-built terraced cottages which were built by the Railway for the accommodation of their staff.
From looking at the census returns from 1851 onwards our group found out that they were mainly inhabited by railway plate layers and porters.
In 1851, the South Eastern Railway directly employed 9 people living in Marden: 4 porters, 4 platelayers as well as the Station Master. By 1881 this had increased to 15, including clerks, signalmen, porters and 8 platelayers.
