The Railway
One of the most important changes that the South Eastern Railway made to the landscape of Marden and its surrounding area was the physical building of the line itself.
The above image is a detail from the Marden tithe map from 1841. It shows the railway line cutting through the corner of an orchard.
Part of the village, including the vicarage, was cut off by the railway line, but in the main the line skirted along the top of the village as it existed at the time.
