The Brown Family
The Brown family are an example of a family who came to Marden to work on the Railway.
The family lived at 5 Railway Cottages. William Brown, the head of the family, was born in Sussex in 1855. He was a railway platelayer, and worked for the South Eastern Railway for around 40 years.
William married a Marden girl, Emily, and they had a large family, some of whom are pictured above. All of the children were born in Marden. The two eldest sons pictured above, Percy and Ernest, were both killed during the First World War. They are both listed on the Congregational Church Memorial Plaque in Marden.
